Municipal Election 2017
Planning on running in the next Municipal Election in October 2017? Here is some important information for you.
Sylvan Lake Elections Package
- including important dates following election.
As outlined in Section 147.21 (1) of the Local Authorities Election Act, which came into effect on January 1st, 2014, no candidate may accept campaign contributions, including the funds of the candidate, unless the candidate is registered under this Act with the municipality in which the candidate intends to run.
As candidates may begin campaign activities for their election and potentially receive campaign contributions or contribute money from their own personal funds for the purpose of the election campaign, the Application for Registration of Notice of Intent to Become a Candidate for Municipal Office (form 3A) is available on the Municipal Affairs website at http://www.municipalaffairs.alberta.ca/am_laea_election_forms
Section 147.21(2) requires municipalities to maintain a register of candidates in relation to the election.
When there is any change in the information provided by the candidate, the candidate is responsible for notifying the municipality within 48 hours of the change and the municipality will adjust the register accordingly (section 147.21(3) of the LAEA).
Section 147.21(6) of the Local Authorities Election Act states: “This section does not apply to a candidate if the candidate’s entire election campaign is funded exclusively out of the candidate’s own funds up to a maximum of $10,000.”
