IMPACT Youth Coalition | Year One Celebration
The Sylvan Lake Youth IMPACT (Individuals Making Positive Action and Change Today) Coalition is a group of youth in grades 7-12 who plan, create, implement and facilitate initiatives and activities that promote unity, acceptance and belonging for all residents of Sylvan Lake. IMPACT is funded through an AHS Addiction Prevention grant and supported by the Town of Sylvan Lake.
In 2020, the IMPACT Coalition made just that – an impact, and to celebrate, their first year, a celebration was held virtually on Friday, November 27.
The youth members of IMPACT and their parent(s) were in attendance, along with Mayor McIntyre, Councilor Rilling, and staff from FCSS. This event was held to celebrate the accomplishments of the Youth IMPACT Coalition over this past year and to highlight the initiatives that were completed, as well as to look ahead at what’s to come. There was a video presentation that highlighted completed projects such as:
- Paint the Town,
- Sylvan Lake Pride Proclamation,
- Positive Rock Garden,
- Downtown Pocket Park Revitalization,
- Kindness Celebration, Social Media Take-over, and a
- Lakeshore Clean-up.
Each member of IMPACT was presented with a basket of goodies that included an IMPACT hoodie, Certificate of Achievement, thank you cards, and a sweet treat.
Excellence Awards were also presented to three youth members:
- Future is Bright Award | Mya McCarthy
- Mountain Mover Award | Jaelyn Macrae
- The Somebody Award | Macy Lyon
In the next few months, IMPACT will be recruiting new youth members. They will also be working on a youth advocacy project, partnering with ASH Canada (Action on Smoking & Health), the Canadian Lung Association and McGill University to pilot a Youth Engagement Toolkit to Reduce Youth Vaping. The group will be one of four youth groups in Canada to pilot the toolkit.
