Centennial Street Modernization Information Webpage Launch
Posted on:
We are pleased to announce the launch of our Centennial Street modernization information web page. The Centennial Street project is an investment in the future of Sylvan Lake’s downtown. The project upgrades Centennial (50) Street from Lakeshore Drive to 48 Avenue. Upgrades include new surface infrastructure, underground infrastructure, sidewalks, and landscaping.
Why modernize Centennial Street?
-> The roadway and underground utilities are over 40 years old and past the end of their life cycle
- It is cheaper to replace aging underground infrastructure before it fails
- Save money by upgrading landscaping and sidewalks at the same time as the road and utilities
- Make it safer for all pedestrians and drivers with traffic-calming design
- Reduce congestion and improve traffic flow
- Improve safety at the Centennial Street rail crossing
- Learn more about the improvements to accessibility
-> Modernize the road and calm traffic
-> Help tourism and business by giving a facelift to this important downtown corridor
When?
The project has two phases, running from 2014 to 2027. We hope to start construction in April 2024, but a firm date is not set. The construction start date depends on:
-> Getting approval to upgrade the train track crossing:
- Receiving the go-ahead from Transportation Canada
- Receiving an upgrade construction schedule from CN Rail
-> Completion of 50 Avenue and Centennial Street intersection upgrades
-> When construction contracts are awarded
-> Weather
How did we get ready?
The Town has prepared and planned for this project since 2014. We had to complete many other projects before we could start the Centennial Street project, such as:
- Public engagements
- Reports
- Design concepts
- Other construction projects
How are we supporting the downtown core?
This project helps downtown businesses by increasing accessibility. Projects are always a community effort. We all must do our part, including residents, businesses, and the Town of Sylvan Lake. The Town of Sylvan Lake is:
- Completing construction in a phased approach
- Limiting July and August construction wherever possible
- Providing the online Ask & Answered for residents, businesses, and property owners
- Providing construction notices in advance
- Connecting downtown businesses with supports to help them thrive during construction
- Meeting with downtown businesses in person
- Sharing business meeting dates
