Alberta's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) came into force for local government bodies on October 1, 1999. FOIP strikes a balance between the public's right to know, and an individual's right to privacy, in terms of information held by the Town of Sylvan Lake.

The FOIP act:

  • Ensures that the Town is open and accountable to the public by allowing access to records; and
  • Protects the privacy of our citizens by controlling how we collect, use and disclose personal information.

Under the provisions of the FOIP Act, you have the right to:

  • Request access to Town of Sylvan Lake records;
  • Access information that we have about you;
  • Request corrections if your personal information is inaccurate; and
  • Request the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner to conduct an independent review of any issue, related to FOIP.
