What's new
The Citizen of the Year awards acknowledges the importance of recognizing significant accomplishments which enhance community spirit and positively impact The Town of Sylvan Lake.
- Nominate a fellow Laker for a Citizen of the Year award from February 3 to March 14 2025 at 12:00 noon

For youth wanting to volunteer
IMPACT (Individuals Making Positive Action and Change Today) teens serve as a voice for youth in our community, volunteering their time to discuss ways to make Sylvan Lake better and rolling up their sleeves to make it happen! Teens can nominate themselves or be nominated by teachers, youth workers, and other adults. Youth choose IMPACT projects, such as:
- Paint the Town: bright and colorful murals in storefront windows
- Proclamation of PRIDE week in Sylvan Lake
- Positive Rock Garden: partnered with local seniors to paint positive messages
- Impact the Environment: beach cleanup, “CREATE” pocket park
- Youth vaping policy change advocacy

The Leaders-in-Training (LiT) Program is designed to help teens develop their leadership skills while having fun and making new friends. Gain work experience and make a difference in your community!
Volunteer expectations:
- Attend all required training
- Commit to volunteering on expected days
- Help staff with activities/events in the Flipside and at the outdoor Skate Park and be a positive role model to participants.

High school mentors are matched with a mentee in grades 3 to 8 to build a positive and nurturing relationship:
- Mentors must apply and complete an interview and training
- Mentors and mentees meet in the mentee’s school 1 hour per week over their lunch break (transportation is provided)
- Mentor commitment is Oct - May
- Mentees are referred through their teachers, school administrator, or Family School Wellness Worker

Volunteering with children and youth
Volunteers help with set up and take down for regular programs or special events. They have positive interactions with parents/caregivers and children ages (0-7 years). Encourage and support participation in planned activities with the direction of the facilitator staff.

Flipside Youth Centre Activity Volunteers assist the coordinator to provide supervision and leadership to children and youth in the afterschool and evening programs. Duties may include setting up activities and engaging with children and youth.

The Sylvan Lake SPARC (Strengthening Positive Assets and Resiliency in Community) Coalition is for people who are passionate about youth. The coalition offers youth development training and community engagement activities.
- Coalition meetings are every third Monday from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Volunteering with adults and older adults
Volunteers visit with a socially isolated older adults to share common interests and companionship through regularly scheduled visits.
Volunteers do not drive the older adults to places in the community or provide personal care, housekeeping, meal preparation or professional medical care.

Volunteering outside
Volunteer in Tourism, Culture, and Special Events
Let’s get to work conserving Sylvan Lake’s heritage buildings! This volunteer opportunity is for creating documentation of the heritage building identified int eh Town of Sylvan Lake’s ongoing Heritage Management Plan project. Volunteers will fil out forms that describe the buildings and attach high quality photographs. Walking around town may be required. Detail oriented nature is essential to ensure high accuracy of documentation. All direction and necessary equipment will be provided (professional photography skills not needed!).
Volunteers help with various tasks at Town of Sylvan Lake special events.

A community-based alternative to court that gives young people a second chance on a bad decision. A panel of Youth Justice Committee volunteers work with young people (12-17 years) in conflict with the law, as well as their families, victims, the legal system, and the community, to find appropriate and meaningful consequences for the young person.
