The Citizen of the Year awards are given to individuals who have made significant contributions to our community and demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of those around them.

All nominees must live, or have lived, in Sylvan Lake to be eligible.

Our 2025 Town of Sylvan Lake Citizen of the Year award recipients!

Nominations should include as much as details and information as possible to support the application. Information should include:

  • A brief history of the individual
  • Years of service to the community
  • Nominee’s contribution
  • Special achievements
  • Awards and other recognition the nominee have received
  • Information should answer the following questions:
  • For what is the nominee being recognized?
  • How did the nominee impact the community?
  • Why is this contribution worthy of community recognition?

Nominees must meet the following minimum eligibility criteria:

  • Nominees must reside or have resided in Sylvan Lake
  • Nominees are to have made a significant contribution to Sylvan Lake
  • Nominees must not currently hold political office
  • Town of Sylvan Lake employees or elected officials may not be considered for an award for their work as Town employees or elected officials
  • Never previously been awarded a Citizen of the Year Award in the category for which they are being nominated
  • If the nominee is the successful recipient in an award category, they agree to actively participate on the Citizen Recognition Committee the following year

Award Categories

Recognizing residents for outstanding achievements or contributions that have improved the quality of life for others. These may include:

  • Community Service
  • Citizenship
  • Acts of heroism or bravery
  • Volunteering

Recognizing residents for outstanding achievement or contribution in literary, visual, performing, or film and video arts, culture, culinary, or heritage. Recipients are recognized for a single action, or for a contribution or achievement over an extended period

Those who have embraced the responsibility of protecting and improving the Environment. Recipients have demonstrated their commitment to maintaining, protecting, and improving the long-term health of the environment for current and future generations

Athletes recognized with the Sports Involvement Award may be players, coaches, or referees. Parent Team Managers or parents who go above and beyond for teams may also be nominated

Awarded to a young person who has accomplished great things such as:

  • Displays strong character and inspires others
  • Helps others and their community
  • Demonstrates commitment and drive while pursuing the arts, and/or displays exceptional creativity and inspiration through the chosen art medium
  • Is a positive representative and demonstrates great respect for their sport as well as other players and coaches
  • Acts out of the kindness of their heart and commit to selfless acts to better the lives of others
  • Demonstrates advocacy and awareness for social change
  • Exhibits care and discernment for the environment and is actively trying to leave the planet a better place for future generations

For those who have volunteered their time within Sylvan Lake or the surrounding area consistently over 10 years or more. Recipients may have volunteered at the same place/event or they may have volunteered at a variety of places/events

Recognizing residents for outstanding achievements or contributions. Actions may have had a profound or extraordinary impact either locally, regionally, provincially, nationally, or internationally
