Dorian Larsen

Biography

I am a life- long Laker. My father Tony Diedrich was a bricklayer whose work still stands to this day and my mother, Emily Diedrich, was a school teacher. Their hard work and commitment to this town instilled values I still hold.

As a Journeyman Electrician, I have tackled everything from estimating, work-front planning inspecting, quality assurance, and commissioning, to working side-by-side with engineers on multi-billion-dollar projects. I learned early that standing my ground and working hard, delivered results. I am confident this experience will aid me as I seek to discover if or where we over spending as well as where we should perhaps be spending more.

Service has always been part of my life, and will naturally spill over if I am to step into this new role.

As a mother of three kids who were involved in everything from hockey, figure-skating, swim team, and soccer, has led me to become deeply involved in many aspects of Sylvan Lake from, organizing tournaments and carnivals to community fundraisers.

My Christian faith guides me to live with integrity, honesty and service to others, values I will bring to the mayors office.

I believe every resident should not only be aware of what plans and changes are being discussed by council but to also feel that they have a say. To this end will always remain transparent as well as available to listen and answer concerns that you, my employer, may have.

I am a builder, a problem solver and hopefully your next Mayor

Candidate priority 1: Fiscal Responsibility and Smart Budgeting

  • With extensive experience in construction and project development, I will ensure that every dollar spent contributes to tangible improvements. I am committed to maintaining transparency in budgeting and exploring innovative ways to enhance services without unnecessary tax increases.

Candidate priority 2: Infrastructure and Community Development

  • I will advocate for the timely completion of essential infrastructure projects, including road repairs, facility upgrades, and sustainable development initiatives. Every part of our town deserves investment and attention to improve quality of life for all residents.

Candidate priority 3: Fair Taxes and Balanced Growth

  • I want to explore ways to help reduce the tax burden on residents while maintaining the services our town relies on. This includes brainstorming ideas with council and the community, such as creating incentive packages to attract commercial and industrial businesses. Strengthening our industrial business base could help balance taxes.

Candidate priority 4: Public Safety and Emergency Services

  • Ensuring the safety of our residents is paramount. I will work closely with local law enforcement and emergency services to address community concerns and implement strategies that enhance public safety across Sylvan Lake.

Candidate priority 5: Listening and Responsiveness

  • I will do my best to ensure residents’ concerns — big or small — are heard and addressed. From taxes and public safety to everyday quality-of-life issues like cleanliness, maintenance, and local amenities. Every voice matters, and Sylvan Lake should be a town that works for everyone.

Candidates for Councillor

Holly Bilodeau

Biography

Hey Lakers, it's your friend Holly!

My husband and I have proudly called Sylvan Lake our home for 26 years now. We have raised our children in this wonderful community and built a business here, which we have run together for over 25 years. We've met many of you at school events or come to know you while spending 24 years cheering on our boys at hockey in the arena(s). We love this town dearly and I feel a sense of responsibility to step forward to be a voice for our residents and business owners, to ensure we stay connected as a community as our town continues to grow.

I have volunteered my time consistently throughout the years we have lived in Sylvan Lake, most recently serving on the Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce board of directors for four years. In this time, I took on the role of Chair and Event Planner for the 2024 Chamber golf tournament and also stepped into the role of Treasurer on the executive board, utilizing my 25 years of experience as a bookkeeper and managing all the financial operations of our business. I call myself the “get ‘er done girl” as I have always been committed to seeing any project through to completion. I pride myself on being very efficient and organized, and I lead with compassion and honesty in all that I do.

My focus is to create better access to information, increase communication between residents/business owners and the Town, promote sustainable tourism, and ensure we have a long-term vision and planning in place for future growth.

Candidate priority 1: Budget

  • One of the biggest complaints I hear from local business owners and residents is about our taxes. We need to look really hard at where taxpayer money is being spent and find additional ways to generate more revenue (besides raising taxes).

Candidate priority 2: The Lake and Tourism

  • The next biggest hot topic amongst locals is the lake. We need to literally clean up our act on Lakeshore: on the beach, on the sidewalks in front of Lakeshore businesses, and on the lake in winter. Our lake is our biggest drawing card for tourism. We need to react better and faster to excess garbage left behind by tourists and get rid of tents.

Candidate priority 3: Planning for future growth

  • The growth in our town is going to continue to climb with the attraction of the lake and our amazing year-round community events. As a long-term Laker, I am concerned about how our town is prepared to handle it all. We need to plan for the impact on:

- Water supply
- Roads
- Utilities
- Schools
- Healthcare
- Emergency services

Candidate priority 4: Our Seniors

  • The heart of our town and the story of our community is rooted in our seniors. We need to ensure we have accessible housing and services to support our seniors for the future.

Ruby Cole-Ellis

Biography

I am proud to call Sylvan Lake home and to be raising my family here. As a long-time entrepreneur, community builder, and advocate for sustainable growth, I am running for Council to ensure Sylvan Lake thrives as a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking community.

I bring over 15 years of experience in sustainability, business development, and stakeholder engagement. I hold a Master’s in Architecture and History (minor in Sustainability History) from Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala and a Post-Graduate Degree in Environmental Management from the University of Calgary, specializing in stakeholder engagement.

My career has taken me across Canada and Latin America, where I co-founded CASSA, an award-winning sustainable construction company, and served as Executive Director of the Guatemala Green Building Council and Regional Director of the Canada Green Building Council – Alberta Chapter. Locally, I founded The Maby Studio, Central Alberta’s premier event and experience design studio, delivering 600+ events. I was honored as Business Woman of the Year (Sylvan Lake Chamber, 2021) and received multiple Platinum Community Votes Awards (2022–2024). I also serve as an RESP Specialist and top recruiter nationwide for CST Savings, helping Alberta families invest in their children’s education.

As Councilor, I will bring bold energy, strong negotiation skills, and a deep commitment to building a Sylvan Lake where families, businesses, and future generations can thrive.

Candidate priority 1: Public Safety

  • Safety is the foundation of a strong community. With youth vandalism and crime on the rise, it’s important that families, businesses, and visitors feel secure in Sylvan Lake. I will advocate for stronger community safety measures, collaboration with law enforcement, and proactive solutions that keep our public spaces safe, welcoming, and enjoyable.

Candidate priority 2: Clean Governance

  • I believe in open, transparent, and responsible leadership. Taxpayer dollars must be managed wisely, with clear accountability and a focus on addressing the real needs of our residents. I am committed to ensuring that every decision is made with honesty and integrity, putting the best interests of Sylvan Lakers first.

Candidate priority 3: Sustainable Development

  • Sylvan Lake has seen incredible growth over the past decade, and the choices we make now will shape our future for generations. I will work to ensure development is well-planned, sustainable, and mindful of infrastructure, environment, and community well-being, so our town continues to thrive without compromising its charm and quality of life.

Candidate priority 4: Fair & Lower Taxes

  • Families in Sylvan Lake deserve a break. I will push for fair tax assessments, identify wasteful spending, and explore new revenue opportunities to ease the financial burden on households. By finding smart efficiencies, we can reduce pressure on residents while still investing in the services and amenities that make Sylvan Lake a great place to live

Candidate priority 5: Supporting Local Business

  • Sylvan Lake’s small and local businesses are at the heart of our community and economy. I will work to create opportunities for business owners to thrive by improving access to grants and resources, supporting local initiatives, and helping businesses benefit from tourism so they can grow and continue serving our residents.

Wade Collinge

Biography

Hello all….My name is Wade. The mother/grandmother of our adult children and grandchildren’s name is Marilyn. We have been together for 50 years, married for 100 years it seems---LOL. We moved to Sylvan Lake in the summer of 1989, have been a property taxpayer for 36 years, and we love it here. We currently live at the peace sign on Lakeshore Drive and 51 Street. We have 2 adults who started Grade 1 at C.P. Blakely and graduated from H.J. Cody then went on to the U of A, later married, and gave Marilyn and I 3 fantastic grandchildren. As a father I was very adamant that our children were to stand on their own two feet and carry their own “stuff” in this life, and I especially related to our daughter “never rely on a man”. They are standing now, and if I died today, I would die a happy man. I am a retired welder/millwright/machinist, which gives me ample opportunity to focus on issues of the day to help make decisions for the operation and direction for the Town of Sylvan Lake.

I have owned a few businesses over time, my “glory days” being a contractor for Sunpine Forest Products in Rocky Mountain House where we installed the world’s first continuous LVL press, which later led me to purchasing a machine shop in Rocky where, at the peak, I had 15 employees and hired contractors as
needed.

The experience of wearing the hats required to efficiently run a business while wearing my coveralls on a daily basis, gives me great insight into efficiency plus “VALUE for your dollar” !!

Candidate Priority 1: Getting input from “resident taxpayers”

  • I believe the biggest complaint from most residents would be property taxes. RESIDENT taxpayers--What do you see as the most inefficient use of taxpayers’ dollars? What would you folks be willing to do without? Can we reduce yearly property taxes? How could we increase the towns’ tax revenue without affecting RESIDENT taxpayers?

Candidate Priority 2: Year-round tourism

  • Over time, residents have paid thousands of dollars to different consulting agencies to address tourism and the growth of Sylvan. They all seem to come back with a cookie cutter thought process. My opinion is if Lakers would like to encourage year-round tourism, we need to build something truly unique utilizing the 3P partnership in the SWARP.

Candidate Priority 3: Education on Sylvan Lake’s future in Alberta

  • I am a major volunteer in a not-for-profit, non-partisan educational society, the Alberta Prosperity Project, and I would encourage all Lakers to listen to the research that has been accomplished. When we reach our goal it will be a major improvement in freedom and prosperity for future Lakers and  Albertans.

Candidate Priority 4: Sylvan Lake History

  • While the archives have been doing an amazing job, they have related to me that they have had many offers of historical items, however there is no place to store or display these items. I would like to advocate for a museum, hopefully being able to utilize the old council chambers/town office on 50th.

Candidate priority 1: Lake Protection and Cleanup

  • This summer showed more lake issues than ever. I’ll implement stronger bylaws with real enforcement, install more trash bins around the lake, and get rid of tents. Our lake is our identity and economic engine - we must protect it for families, tourism, and future generations through decisive action now.

Candidate priority 2: Water Security Planning

  • I’m not done my work on the Water and Waste Water Committee. We need a comprehensive 50 year water plan addressing supply, treatment, and infrastructure. We deserve future upgrades, align planning with growth, and ensure emergency preparedness while managing costs for ratepayers responsibly.

Candidate priority 3: Enhanced Safety Support

  • We need more RCMP presence and bylaw enforcement to keep our community safe. I’ll advocate provincially for increased policing, expand bylaw officer capacity, and implement modern enforcement tools. Safe communities attract families and protect our tourism economy while ensuring respectful lake enjoyment.

  • I made council votes transparent so you can see how we vote. I’ll maintain open communication, improve municipal processes, and ensure your concerns are heard and addressed. Democracy works best when citizens can hold representatives accountable - that’s my commitment to you always.

Nichole Drevenak

Biography

I'm Nichole Drevenak & I have proudly called Sylvan Lake home since 2010. I was born & raised in Alberta and this is where I've chosen to raise my family and build my business. Many of you know me as a hairstylist and owner of Meraki Hair, where I've spent 25 years listening, supporting & connecting with people from our community.

I'm a mom of three, a bonus mom in a busy, blended family and a small business owner who understands both the joys and the challenges of living and working in Sylvan Lake. When I'm not at the salon, I love gardening, crochet, paddleboarding & tackling home DIY projects, but family always comes first!

What makes Sylvan so special is more than scenery, it's the people! This is a town where neighbors look out for one another, where a smile and friendly hello are part of everyday life. We're warm, welcoming and proud to lend a hand when it's needed most, and that spirit of community is what I want to protect and strengthen.

I'm running for council because I want to see Sylvan Lake grow responsibly while keeping that beloved small town character that makes us unique! From managing tourism and protecting the Lakeshore to keeping taxes fair and supporting local businesses, I believe in real talk, not political jargon, and in making decisions that put OUR community FIRST. Council should be approachable, accountable, and always willing to listen.

Sylvan Lake is where I belong, and I'd be honored to serve our community with honesty, accountability & heart!

Candidate priority 1: The Lakeshore - Sylvan’s Pride, Not Our Problem

  • Tents on the beach create safety concerns for families. Washrooms are filthy and vandalized, garbage overflows, parking is chaos and tourism is taking a toll on the very lake we love! Tourism is vital, but not at the cost of our community. Locals deserve to be proud of their community and visitors need to respect the privilege of enjoying it!

Candidate priority 2: Taxes, Property Values & Affordability

  • Sylvan families & seniors are being squeezed by rising taxes, property values and unclear spending. Growth must balance affordability with transparency on every tax dollar. Residents feel blindsided by increased taxes. We need more open communication. I'll push for:
    • Responsible budgeting
    • Clear reporting
    • Policies that protect affordability for all

Candidate priority 3: Community Growth & Small Business Development

  • Sylvan Lake is growing fast. Growth brings opportunities but also real challenges. We must protect small business, the backbone of our economy while maintaining the charm & spirit that makes us proud while planning for the future. This means transparent zoning, space for local businesses and smart community respected growth and protecting our vibe!

Joe Iwanicki

Biography

I am a dedicated lawyer with a strong commitment to serving my community and making our town a better place for everyone. With a passion for justice and advocacy, I have built a career focused on helping people navigate complex legal issues, always striving to ensure I conduct myself fairly and with integrity.

As a proud parent of two young girls, I understand the importance of creating a safe, supportive, and vibrant community where all children can thrive.

My vision for our town is to foster a community where families feel secure, voices are heard, and opportunities exist for all residents. I believe in transparent governance, responsible development, and investing in our schools, parks, and infrastructure. If elected, I will dedicate myself to listening to your concerns, advocating for practical solutions, and working tirelessly to build a brighter future for our town.

I want Sylvan Lake to continue to be a place residents can be proud to call home. We are all stronger together and only by listening to residents' concerns can we build a more prosperous and resilient community.

Candidate Priority 1: Petty crime and public nuisances

  • From speaking with numerous residents about their concerns I hear a common theme. People are frustrated with a perceived lack of attention given to things like theft, vandalism, and garbage. These problems make residents feel ashamed of their community. I will do what I can to bring attention and resources to these issues.

Candidate Priority 2: To encourage Sylvan Lake’s natural advantages for economic growth and expanding new areas for business development and investment

  • As a business owner I understand that economic growth can only occur when ambition can align with opportunity. Sylvan Lake needs to provide opportunities for business owners to want to operate from Sylvan Lake and take advantage of the natural beauty of the area as well as the influx of people during the busy season.

Candidate Priority 3: Town infrastructure

  • Like it or not Sylvan Lake is growing. The Town needs to pay attention to this reality and plan for the future. Our water supply, roads, utilities, and other public goods all need serious attention so they can meet the demands of the residents of 10-20-30 years from now. We need to take these issues seriously today, not 10 years from now.

Candidate Priority 4: Our seniors need more support in Sylvan Lake

  • The rising cost of living and a shortage of seniors living facilities are a problem . In smaller communities this pain is felt more deeply as our neighbors are forced to move to larger centers to find accommodations, potentially moving away from community support and family. We need to expand and grow supports and facilities in town

Candidate Priority 5: Making the Town’s budget make sense

  • It is constantly mentioned that our taxes are too high. I am not prepared to admit that taxes are high, low, or reasonable. What I am prepared to focus on is making the Town’s budget make sense to the average person. I want all residents to feel like they understand where their tax dollars are going.

Teej Johannesson

Biography

Hello!

My name is Teej Johannesson. I am a devoted husband, proud father, and passionate community leader who has spent the past decade serving as a coach and youth mentor in Sylvan Lake. I have a strong commitment to creating better, safer, and more affordable lives for all Lakers.

A leader by nature, I bring energy, passion, drive, and purpose to everything I do —whether it’s guiding young athletes on the field or empowering the next generation to become confident, capable leaders. My deep passion for youth development and community building has made me a trusted mentor to many of the youth in our community.

Rooted in integrity, action, and a genuine love for Sylvan Lake, I continue to work toward a brighter future for all Lakers. I am not corrupted by politics, I will not do things "just because its the way we have always done it". I am a new, fresh face, who understands that If elected, I work for Lakers and Lakers only. I do not care about making policies that benefit tourists who do not pay taxes and do not vote. If elected, my allegiance is solely to the people of Sylvan Lake.

We need to have a council that is fully transparent, and accountable to the people of Sylvan Lake. I am not running to push my ideas or beliefs, I am running to represent the people. Its my belief that we need some new voices on council and 2025 is the year to get that done!

Thank you!

Candidate priority 1: Use outside the box ideas to create revenue for the town without raising taxes on our citizens.

  • Sylvan Lake’s beach is one of our greatest assets — and it's time we treat it that way. We must start using this valuable resource to support our town financially, rather than placing more tax burdens on our citizens. That means exploring all revenue-generating options, including the possibility of a park pass or usage fee for non-residents.

Candidate priority 2: Protecting and Valuing Our Beach for the Benefit of Our Community

  • Right now, our beach is being overwhelmed by visitors who don’t respect our beach. They leave garbage behind, misuse our facilities, and often contribute little to our local economy. This isn’t sustainable — and it’s not fair to the families who live here and take pride in our town.

Candidate priority 3: Creating a Committee for mentoring youth, and creating future leaders

  • Our youth are not just the future — they are the present. It's time we invest in them with intention and purpose. I am committed to establishing a dedicated Youth Mentorship & Leadership Committee in Sylvan Lake to help guide, support, and empower the next generation of community leaders.

Candidate priority 4: Strengthening Crime Reduction and Community Safety

  • Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home, their neighborhood, and throughout our community. That’s why one of my top priorities is to strengthen crime reduction efforts in Sylvan Lake through proactive, collaborative, and community-focused strategies. We must work closely with local law enforcement, community leaders, and residents.

Candidate priority 5: Working for the people of sylvan lake, and only the people of sylvan lake.

  • Leadership starts with listening. One of my core priorities is to ensure that every voice in Sylvan Lake is heard, respected, and valued. Our community is filled with passionate, thoughtful people who care deeply about the future of our town — and their ideas, concerns, and lived experiences must guide the decisions we make.

Tim Mearns

Biography

I’ve had the privilege of serving the Town of Sylvan Lake as a Councillor for the past eight years, and it has been an honour to contribute to the growth and success of our community. Over this time, I’ve witnessed first hand how our town has grown not only in population and economic opportunity, but also in the way we continue to welcome new families who choose to call Sylvan Lake home.

My wife and I have been proud to call this community home for over 33 years, raising our three children and building lasting connections with neighbours, friends, and local organizations. Having lived here through our communities growth from fewer than 4000 residents nearly 17,000 today I bring both long-term perspective of a resident and the experience of a Councillor to the decision-making table.

While challenges are an inevitable part of growth, they also bring opportunities. Over the past eight years, I’ve seen our community face challenges head-on, turning them into positive outcomes that makes Sylvan Lake stronger and more resilient. These experiences have shaped my commitment to ensure that council decisions are made responsibly, with an eye toward both present needs and future opportunities.

I’m proud to once again seek your support in this municipal election. I remain dedicated to strengthening the quality of life. We all enjoy and ensuring that Sylvan Lake remains a vibrant, thriving and sustainable community for generations to come.

Candidate Priority 1: Sustainable Water for a Growing Community

  • Sylvan Lake is growing, and I take seriously the responsibility of securing a reliable, sustainable water supply. Candidate Priority 2: Balancing Tourism and Community Needs

Ian Oostindie

Biography

My wife and I have been active volunteers in our community since moving here in 2007 from Yukon. In 2011, I was awarded Citizen of the Year, recognizing the hours of dedication to our community. I acknowledge my wife, because our mutual support allows us to both volunteer. We have never slowed down as we believe “It takes a village”.

I am currently President of the Seniors Association and also volunteer every week for newcomers in our town.

I have been chair of our Community Foundation and Municipal Services cttes, a coach for years, a decade on Friends of the Library, raised money for local cancer support programs and served as treasurer/secretary for that group, and occasionally help at Bethany Care Centre. I jokingly call myself a community geek. I am only naming some of the Sylvan Lake contributions and nothing of my busy previous years from scouting to sports.

As a councillor, I have been one of the busiest committee-serving members as I am semi-retired and able to dedicate tons of time. Service includes co-chairing a Transportation/Economic Corridor project through the Rockies to Central Alberta, Wastewater Commission, Intermunicipal Planning ctte, Emergency Management, Pogadl Park Advisory, Seniors Lodge Foundation and more.

My original academic background includes a degree in physics, which is why I enjoy oversight of infrastructure in town. I studied some economics and accounting, which gives me budget insight. My WW2-surviving parents taught me frugalness.

Candidate priority 1: Healthy Lake

  • The lake is our jewel. It is often the reason we came, or why we stayed; the cornerstone of our lives and economy. The lake represents the nature still around us. I will always ask, “Is it good for our Lake?” Building naturalization in open spaces filters both our property runoff and street stormwater before much of it drains into our lake.

Candidate priority 2: Healthy Youth

  • My greatest work thread has been to uplift youth through education and support families in raising kids. That is why I say #HealthyYouth is one of my ‘biases’. Promoting healthy youth behaviour and involvement through good programs is one key to how we can help our community. Youth should be busy and also listened to for solutions.

Candidate priority 3: Collaboration to an extreme

  • My council work has included regional committees where collaboration is realistically the only way we can solve anything. These committees lately included: Water & Wastewater Commission with 8 local governments, the Intermunicipal Development Plan ctte, co-chair of the Central Alberta Economic Corridor to BC, and working with council colleagues.

Candidate priority 4: Infrastructure Excellence

  • I often focus on basic infrastructure. When we turn the tap, flush the toilet, or put our waste out, we need it to move down a pipe or road efficiently. We need to build healthy financial reserves to build and protect high-quality infrastructure. I support a growing sustainable community, including more senior housing and cultural facilities.

Candidate priority 5: Calm decision making

  • I apply calm, diverse decision-making skills coming from experiences in small business, community & education consulting, property managing, airbrakes instructor; 35 years as educator: administrator, physics & math teacher, curriculum writer; negotiator, training fund manager, risk threat assessor, public speaker, conference organizer, and more.

Graham Parsons

Biography

My wife and I, like many Sylvan Lake residents, weren’t born here—we chose it. We moved here 52 years ago, when the population was just 1,700. We saw the potential to help build a vibrant, recreation-based community around one of Alberta’s greatest lakes. That vision worked—and we never left.

My career has always been rooted in recreation. The Sylvan Lake Summer Hockey Camp, which became my livelihood, was more than a business—it was a bridge into community involvement. My passion began as a teen in Camrose, where I joined a youth leadership group and gained early experience in coaching, officiating, and recreation programming. Those skills laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to public service and municipal governance.

Over five decades, I’ve seen Sylvan Lake grow from a small tourist town into a thriving, internationally known destination. With growth comes the ongoing challenge of balancing development with sustainability while protecting what makes our community unique.

As I seek another term on Council, I bring experience—not just in governance, but in how Sylvan Lake has grown and how we must continue to guide that growth responsibly. I’m proud to have lived, worked, and raised my family here. I know our past, understand our present, and am committed to helping shape a strong, sustainable future.

Candidate priority 1: Planning and Managing Core Infrastructure

  • Infrastructure ages - sometimes faster than expected, as Calgary's example showed last year. Careful monitoring, planning and upgrading are essential.

Candidate priority 2: Ensuring a Safe Community

  • Recent years have brought uncertainty that has affected community behavior. Working closely with Protective Services - RCMP, Bylaw, and Fire - we must implement proactive policies to reduce crime and keep Sylvan Lake safe.

Candidate priority 3: Environmental Lake Protection & Economic Development

  • Protecting Sylvan Lake is essential for both residents and tourism sector. Strong environmental policies will ensure the lake remains a natural recreation facility and an economic driver for generations to come.

Biography

I have been a Councillor in Sylvan Lake for 12 years. In that time we have seen enormous growth. Sylvan Lake is growing and we need to move with that growth. From developing spaces to help kids develop and grow, to creating facilities that serve the diverse needs of a growing community, I have been part of the conversations and decision to get us along the way.

As a parent and neighbour, I understand the importance of safe parks, quality programs, and affordable housing. With your support, I can continue working to make Sylvan Lake an even better place for families, youth, and the next generation.

Let’s keep building a town we’re proud to call home, together.

Candidate priority 1: Advocating for Families and Youth

  • My focus has been on making Sylvan Lake the best place to raise a family. That means safe parks, great playgrounds, and programs that help our youth thrive, sports, arts, or support for kids who need a little extra guidance. I believe in supporting youth programs like the Flipside Youth Centre and the Community Helpers Program. This builds Sylvan.

Candidate priority 2: Responsible Fiscal Decisions

  • Fiscal responsibly means planning for housing that works for young families, seniors, and everyone else so our town remains welcoming and accessible for generations to come. Supporting development and Advocating for responsible growth in communities like Grayhawk, Iron Gate and Sixty West, ensuring that new developments offer affordable housing.

Candidate priority 3: Reasonable Taxation and Spending

  • I’m committed to smart financial decisions: keeping taxes fair, managing our budgets, and making sure every dollar is spent to benefit our families and our community. That means making smart financial decisions that keep taxes fair and ensure our town's resources are used wisely, so we can continue to invest in the services and amenities.

Candidate priority 4: Advocating with Provincial Government to meet the needs of Sylvan Lake

  • I have been a steady advocate for the building of a new High School in Sylvan Lake. I know that the needs of the community need to be fought for and we need to work with and advocate to the province at every opportunity. Working with our Provincial partners is the only way to make things happen in Sylvan.

Candidate priority 5: Focus on Infrastructure that Meets the needs of Lakers

  • We have a great number of needs that are constantly being stretched. From Water and Waste Water to the need to keep the lake clean to advocating for a better Health facility. Our roads and sidewalks need to be better maintained and our services maintained to a level that Meets the needs of all Lakers. This is a focus and a priority.

Pat Sawyer

Biography

Hi, my name is Pat Sawyer I was raised in Sylvan Lake from age 7 and went to C.P. Blakely and finished High School at H.J. Cody, I have always been proud to call Sylvan Lake home I have immediate and extended family as long time Sylvan Lake residences. Most of you might remember me from working at the old Arena, I have built and sold a Successful Vending Company that was Alberta wide with 3 locations in Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary. After that I was a Private Investigator and was also involved with the Risk Mitigation unit with a large Canadian Company. That experience helped me pursue a career career in Civil Enforcement that I just celebrated 10 years. I very much enjoy my career as a Civil Enforcement Bailiff.

I have always had an interest in being on Town Council even from a young age, today at the age of 49 I feel now is a good time to run for Council, with my experience in dealing with the general public, and risk mitigation backed by my business experience, I feel I would be a great candidate to serve the people of Sylvan Lake on Town Council.

I know that the biggest complaint for the people of Sylvan Lake is Property Taxes. Another big complaint I notice is how the beach is being managed, with the complaints on the washrooms to the tents and excessive garbage. Another big complaint is the closing of vital streets in the summer, I also feel that we need to have better oversight before project start, Traffic and other issues seem to be constant problems.

Candidate priority 1: Improve operations on the beach

  • As most of us know the beach has been a contentious issue, dirty bathrooms, overflowing garbage's, tents and other issues is a priority of mine, we are a tourist destination and can improve our beach.

Candidate priority 2: Reintroduction of VLT's

  • In 1997 a a vote was held and VLT's where taken out of Sylvan Lake, did you know that it was a difference of 10 votes that decided if they stay or go. Today Sylvan Lake has a different demographic than it did in 1997 we have more tourists, a portion of the revenues from VLT's go back in to the community, this in turn helps keep taxes lowering taxes

Candidate priority 3: Boat Launch

  • The property where the old Waterslide sat is owned by the Town of Sylvan Lake, we are a resort town with out a proper boat launch, what I would like to see is that property repurposed in to a 2 slip boat launch, my idea would be to remove the existing structure on the property and build a small structure to take payment and have a small store.

Candidate priority 3: Lower taxes

  • I intend on working collaboratively with the new councillors on lowering property taxes, the seemingly go up every year, I feel if we reevaluate some of the spending a difference can be made.

Alfred is gifted strategic thinker, able to consider multiple perspectives and weigh the benefits of each. Often his unique perspectives allow for creative solutions that satisfy multiple goals.

Christian Values
Everyone has a set of core values and beliefs that directs their lives and while Alfred does not flaunt his Christian beliefs, they direct his decisions and actions.

Healthy families are the basis for a healthy society. Our children and our young people are our future. It is our responsibility and opportunity to guide them while allowing them to grow and make their own decisions, recognizing that with every decision there is also a consequence.

Tenacious Work Ethic

Retired Business Consultant
After over 20 years as a successful business consultant, Alfred has finally retired and is in now available to dedicate his time and energy to this new challenge. Candidate Priority 1: Maintain A Healthy Family Community and Protect Our Children & Youth

  • A community where families feel supported, kids can play freely, and we all feel proud to call it home.

Candidate Priority 2: Manage Sustainable Growth

  • Growth is a component of a thriving community. Nothing stays static for long. A healthy community, like a healthy business, will grow, but if that growth is unchecked and allowed to run rampant without any control, it will be like a runaway train, destined to catastrophic failure. Growth must be accompanied by appropriate supportive services.

Candidate Priority 3: Blend Tourism & Residents’ Interests

  • Sylvan Lake is our home. It is also a tourist destination. That's one of the attributes that makes Sylvan Lake so special to us all. This presents a tension that we must navigate. We want to be hospitable, but we don't want our guests to overrun our home. We can do both with some clear and strategic thinking.

Candidate Priority 4: Be Fiscally Responsible & Restrained

  • "Spend it like it's your own money!" Anyone in leadership who has the responsibility of spending other peoples' money, does well to realize how easy it is to spend money when it's not your own. Nobody is immune to this temptation. Public funds are exactly that - public - and there must always be complete transparency and accountability.

Candidate Priority 5: Adhere to Conservative Principles

  • Everyone is responsible for their own actions. This provides freedom with personal responsibility. Limiting government interference enables this freedom of choice in our lives.

Kelsey Wilson

Biography

I moved to Sylvan Lake in 2011, but my connection to this land started with my grandparents. Johnny and Constance Wilson’s trailer on 38th Street, where they lived for 30 years, was a jumping point for glorious summers building sandcastles on the beach, playing mini golf, racing to the waterslides, and being coached by Sutters in the Sylvan Lake Summer Hockey Camp.

My grandparents’ trailer is long gone, replaced by a new build, but two spruce trees that Grandpa Johnny dug out of a ditch and planted remain; a reminder of a simpler time and village. Sylvan Lake may have evolved over the years, but the heart of the community remains the same. As someone who was born and raised in Canmore, I am all too familiar with the change that tourism can bring, but with that change comes great opportunity.

While my nostalgia for this town runs deep, so does my passion for Sylvan Lake’s today, tomorrow, and future.

Fast forward to present day: I am a respected veteran teacher, volunteer, writing enthusiast, dog owner to Dexter Puppy, voracious reader, world traveller, and newly-married to my wonderful husband and paramedic, Stefan. I want to promote what makes this town so amazing, while effecting change where improvement is needed. More than anything, I wish for Sylvan Lake to continue to grow as a safe and inclusive place that anybody can visit or call home, just as I have been so lucky to do.

I am a Laker for life, and I would be honoured to serve my community as a town counsellor.

Candidate priority 1: Pathways Parks Pedestrians

  • As Sylvan Lake’s population increases, so does the demand on our parks and playgrounds. In order to safely access them, it is crucial that pathways are pedestrian-friendly and accessible year round. Pedestrians, cyclists, runners and motorists alike should feel safe as they experience everything that Sylvan has to offer.

Candidate priority 2: Sustainable Tourism and Preservation of the Lake

  • Tourists who visit Sylvan invariably end up in, on, or near the lake. Therefore, it goes without saying that responsible tourism and maintaining the lake are top priorities. In order for future generations to enjoy this beautiful ecosystem, environmental upkeep and respect for the lake is of the utmost importance.

Candidate priority 3: Opportunities for Youth

  • While there are many programs for youth to get involved with the town, it is imperative to develop even more opportunities. I have dedicated my career to working closely with young people and outlets that keep young minds busy and provide them with opportunities to contribute positively to their community will positively impact the town as a whole.

Candidate priority 4: Supporting Local Business and Economic Development

  • There are so many amazing establishments unique to Sylvan Lake that must be promoted all year round. These businesses provide tourists and citizens alike with everything they need, and efforts must be made to support them to keep Sylvan Lake’s economy running strong.

Candidate priority 5: Hearing from you!

  • I know what I want, but I am just one voice. By hearing from you and representing your wishes, I will best be able to serve the community that has given me so much. Let me know what your top priorities are for Sylvan Lake to make it an even more amazing community.
