Grey Hawk Water Trunk Main Line Upgrade

Water main upgrades - planning for future growth and saving tax dollars
When new subdivisions are built, developers must meet a minimum standard for infrastructure such as water mains. Upgrading the water mains during construction of a subdivision is much cheaper than upgrading them years down the road. The Town's Water Master Plan, created by the Public Works Department, identifies critical areas for this type of upgrade. That plan identified a water trunk main line in the new Grey Hawk subdivision would be a good candidate to upgrade for future proofing. The Town estimated that an upgrade would cost roughly $1,200,000.
Without an upgrade, the water main trunk line may only have been able to handle 10-15 years of growth. The new trunk line should be a permanent fix for any future population increase.
Instead of doing the work alone, the Town partnered with the Grey Hawk developer Madlee to install the upgrade. We estimated the cost for the shared upgrade but did not allocate budget funds until Madlee provided final construction costs. Madlee covered the costs of a 250 mm line, and the Town paid the extra to upgrade to a 400 mm line ($300,000).
Efficient work from the Public Works Department, and collaboration with Madlee, realized a savings of approximately $900,000.
