Tree Belt Cleanup Begins
Posted on:
As part of the Town’s Urban Forest Management Plan initiatives, staff have started to address some of the deadfall within the Town’s tree belts.
Recognizing the importance that dead trees and downed wood play within the ecosystem, selective removal will occur. It allows the Town to maximize the habitats of various animals while managing fire risk and concerns for litter and debris.
Our Parks team has taken all wildlife and birds into consideration during the development and implementation of our Plan. The nesting period, as identified by Government of Canada Environment & Natural Resources, for birds within our geographic area is mid-April to late-August each year, and the selective removal of deadfall and downed trees within our trail system will be completed well before the April 15th date.
As several of the Town’s tree belts are adjacent to the trail network, hazardous trees will be flagged and later removed by a third party aborist who will help with assistance and asessment. Clean-up efforts have begun along the CP Trail, east of Ryders Ridge Boulevard and will continue during the spring and summer months while following all regulations within the Migratory Bird Convention Act.
