Cannabis Legalization: Considered municipal regulations
Posted on:
The federal government of Canada has announced plans to legalize non-medical cannabis this summer (2018). In an effort to prepare, the Town of Sylvan Lake has been seeking feedback from the public with respects to:
- Rules and regulations for cannabis retail operating within the municpality; and
- Rules and regulations for the public consumption (smoking/vaping), of cannabis.
A public opinion survey closed on March 23rd, and Town Administration (staff), went to work developing a regulatory concept, and presented their recommended rules and regulations to the public for input at an open house on April 11th.
The event was very well attended - thank you to everyone who came out and contributed.
Considered Land Use Regulations
- Administration is proposing a 150 metre buffer zone between cannabis retail stores, and Provincial health facilities, public libraries, indoor municipal recreational facilities, community centres, and schools;
- Administration is proposing a separation distance of 150 metres between cannabis retail stores.
Considered Public Consumption Regulations
- Administration is proposing to expand smoking restrictons (bans) to include:
- Public parks and playground properties (including Sylvan Lake Park/Beach, and off leash dog park); and
- Municipal facilities/properties where children or youth frequent (including the NexSource Centre, Library, and the Family and Community Centre);
- The Town of Sylvan Lake will also update our smoking bylaws to include definitions associated with cannabis, and broaden our public smoking restrictions associated with tobacco.
