Evacuating your home, business, or location in general, is necessary during some emergency situations. Plan ahead to help cope.
During potential evacuation situations, Town of Sylvan Lake officials will communicate to the public through telephone alerts, local media, social media, door-to-door, and emergency service personnel. The Town of Sylvan Lake recommends all Albertans sign up for Alberta Emergency Alerts.
In an emergency, a Reception Centre will open to affected members of the public.
Preparing to evacuate
When preparing to evacuate, and if time allows:
- Alert all family members;
- Know the whereabouts of all family members at all times;
- Ensure vehicles are ready and fueled;
- Access your emergency plan and emergency kit/supplies;
- Secure your home for departure.

What to do when evacuating
Leave your home when advised; ignoring a warning may put you and your family at risk. Cooperation during an evacuation ensures emergency personnel are available and free to treat life threatening situations.
When leaving your home, take your emergency kit with you.
Pets are considered a secondary priority. Only bring your pet to a Reception Centre if it is small enough to cage or crate, and has enough food and water to last a minimum of two weeks.
Notify the Reception Centre if you have brought pets with you, or left pets behind.
Secure your home when evacuating. Lock doors and windows, turn off/down the heat, and do not leave "attractive" items out in sight (time permitting).
Bring special medication and prescriptions with the person requiring them. Register all special medical needs at the Reception Centre.
Alcohol, firearms, or items determined as "dangerous", are not allowed in a Reception Centre, and the public is advised against evacuating with such items.
Returning from an evacuation
When returning from an evacuation, do not enter your home unless an official has determined it safe to do so. Mold and other toxic substances are a concern at this time.
Do not consume any food or beverage that have been left inside the home while you were away.
